Description
This large medal is the official medal of the Cotton States and International Exposition, the 1895 World's Fair held in Atlanta, Georgia. The obverse has an image of a bale of cotton above which is a phoenix rising from flames enclosing the date 1865. The date 1895 is on a banner above the image, and the name of the exposition and its city are along the rim. The reverse has a bust and the nameHENRY W. GRADY
, whose writings and speeches helped to reunite the people of the U. S. following the Civil War, and, along the rim, are the words
OFFICIAL SOUVENIR MEDAL
. This medal was struck very well, with high-relief (three-dimensional) images. The composition is gilt bronze (with some remaining gold areas), and the diameter is
approximately 34 mm (nearly 1-3/8"), catalogued as so-called dollar HK-268
.
This medal is in very fine condition, with fairly light actual wear, signs of handling including rim bumps, and toning, and it is bright.
